Sacraments

  • Baptism

Baptism confers the character of Christ; it gives the baptized person a share in Christ’s life and entrance into his faith community. That’s why we must be baptized before we can celebrate another sacrament.

Baptism is the beginning. The person who is plunged into the baptismal font emerges form the waters a “new creation” with a new life. This new life is the Holy Spirit making a home in us and giving us the power to know God and fulfill his plan for our lives.

Here are St. Mary, infant or small children's baptisms normally take place on Saturday or Sunday, after Mass. Other times can be arranged at the discretion of the pastor. To schedule a baptism for your baby or young child, contact the parish office.

  • Reconciliation

Reconciliation is a sacrament in which a person confesses their sins to a priest, who grants absolution on behalf of Christ, thereby forgiving those sins and restoring the person’ relationship with God and the Church.

The sacrament of Reconciliation is offered on Saturdays at 3:30pm – 4:15pm, Wednesdays at 5:00pm – 5:50pm, First Fridays at 6:30pm – 6:50pm or by appointment by contacting the pastor.

Communal reconciliation services are offered at select churches in the deanery during Advent and Lent.  Times and locations are announced in the Sunday bulletin.

  • Eucharist

Just as table fellowship was impartant to Jesus' culture, it is also important to us as Catholics. By sharing the Eucharist as a meal with our brothers and sisters in Christ, we are showing our camaraderie with each other. Unlike the Jewish households of Jesus' time who offered sacrifices to God such as animals or fruits of their harvest, Catholics believe Jesus' death on the cross was the ultimate sacrifice. Every Mass, Jesus is re-presented as that sacrifice. We celebrate the "memorial of his sacrifice" and "offer to the Father what he has himself given us: the gifts of creation" (CCC 1357).

  • Confirmation

Confirmation is a sacrament of initiation; it completes what baptism begins. Through the Holy Spirit we receive the courage to live our faith and evangelize ourselves to others.

Confirmation is normally held in the month of January for those in their sophomore year of high school.

For information concerning the Sacrament of Confirmation, please contact Martha Schmitt at 812-482-7041 or mjschmitt@evdio.org.

  • Anointing of the Sick

In this sacrament, we pray that the sick be healed in body, soul, and spirit. God alone knows what kind of healing the sick need most: healing a wound, converting fear into courage, lessening loneliness, turning confusion into insight.

Please contact the parish office to receive an anointing for an illness or before surgery.

  • Marriage

Christian marriage is a relationship of life-giving love in which a man and a woman make the love of Christ present to each other and become a sign of the love of Christ to those around them. Through their love and faithfulness, they help each other grow in holiness.

Please call the parish office at least six months prior to anticipated wedding day.

All couples will meet with Fr. Bill several times for marriage preparation.

Marriage preparation involves assessment of the couple’s communication and compatibility, assessment of their faith commitment, and wedding ceremony plans with Fr. Bill.

  • Holy Orders

The sacrament of Holy Orders establishes bishops, priests, and deacons as official Church leaders. Through this sacrament, men are ordained “to serve in the name and in the person of Christ the Head in the midst of the community” (CCC1591).
